Zombo district is struggling to provide quality healthcare services due to a severe shortage of healthcare workers. The district's healthcare facilities are overwhelmed, with some health centers having only two healthcare workers to serve large populations of patients.
The Vice President Uganda Nurses and Midwifes Union Northern Region Ram Andua has decried the severe shortage of health workers in the Uganda’s Health Care System.
According to the Vice President, healthcare workers are stretched to the breaking point, with many facilities struggling to cope with the high volume of patients due to facilities being overwhelmed and understaffed.
He has called on government intervention to address the staffing crisis and ensure that healthcare workers are fairly compensated for their services.
"We are overwhelmed and stretched with work, and it's really very painful and I appeal to government authorities to implement a new staffing structure to alleviate the burden on healthcare workers said Ram Andua.”
The staffing shortages in Zombo district are not limited to Nurses and Midwives. The district's healthcare workforce is woefully understaffed, with a significant shortage of doctors, midwives, and other healthcare professionals.
Vice Chairperson Grace Oleru described the situation as "very sad." "When you come to Zombo in health facilities, workers are very few in number indeed. Some health center II facilities you will only get two health workers serving many populations of patients, and it is really very sad for them as a district."
The Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Zombo district acknowledged that a new staffing structure for medical workers is ready for implementation, but its success hinges on increasing the wage bill of each district local government.
"As CAOs, our struggle will be to push for the wage bill to be increased, but things are not easy, and we may not go for recruitment immediately," the DCAO said.
The Ministry of Health reports that the healthcare workforce in Uganda is severely understaffed, with one Doctor serving every 25,000 people, one Nurse serving every 1,700 people, and one Midwife serving every 9,000 patients.
These ratios are far below the recommended standards, highlighting the urgent need for government intervention to address the staffing crisis and ensure that Ugandans receive quality healthcare services.
The Deputy RDC of Zombo District Grace Atim noted that healthcare workers are "working like donkeys" without adequate compensation or support. "Every day, we pray that the wage bill should be increased so that we can improve staffing levels and give our healthcare workers a break," the Deputy RDC said.
As the situation continues to deteriorate, healthcare workers and local leaders are calling on the government to take immediate action to address the staffing shortages and improve working conditions for healthcare workers.
Recently, the government commissioned a new health facility in Otheko, Paidha sub-county, which is expected to improve healthcare services in the area.
However, the facility's success will depend on the availability of healthcare workers to staff it.
