Uganda Prisons Service says Kizza Besigye was discharged from Mulago on August 7 and returned to Luzira Prisons Hospital, ending days of uncertainty over his whereabouts and health.
NILE POST
Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) has clarified that opposition figure Kizza Besigye was discharged from Mulago National Referral Hospital and returned to Luzira Prisons Hospital, where he is continuing treatment.
Dr Besigye, Prisons said on Tuesday. was discharged on August 7 after spending 10 days at Mulago. The four-time presidential candidate was taken to Mulago in critical condition after collapsing in court and was initially admitted in Intensive Care Unit.
The confirmation comes after Besigye’s family and the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) raised concerns over his whereabouts following his controversial discharge from Mulago, amid conflicting reports about where he had been taken and his medical condition.
Frank Baine Mayanja, Senior Commissioner of Prisons Cooperation and Corporate Affairs and spokesperson for UPS, said the prison medical team is now overseeing Besigye’s treatment and that his condition is improving.
“After 10-days admission at Mulago National Referral Hospital, Col. (Rtd) Dr. Kizza Besigye was discharged back to Luzira Prisons Hospital on 7th August 2026,” Baine said.
He said Dr Besigye’s immediate family members and personal doctors, including his sister Dr Olive Kobusingye, continue to have access to him while he receives treatment at the prison hospital.
“The Uganda Prisons Service medical team is fully in charge as he continues with treatment and his health condition is steadily improving,” Baine said.
The statement provides the first official confirmation from Prisons regarding Besigye’s whereabouts since his discharge from Mulago.
At the weekend, Baine declined to comment to Nile Post when asked whether Besigye was in the custody of the Prisons Service and about his medical condition, instead referring questions to Winnie Byanyima, who has spoken publicly about Besigye’s situation as a family spokesperson.
UPS has now urged the public to disregard reports concerning Besigye’s whereabouts and health, describing some of the information circulating as misinformation and disinformation.
“UPS urges the public to disregard misinformation and disinformation regarding his whereabouts and apparent worrying health condition,” Baine said.
The Prisons did not disclose the specific medical condition for which Besigye was admitted to Mulago or provide details about the treatment he is currently receiving.
Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate and long-time opposition figure, was admitted to Mulago National Referral Hospital after collapsing in the dock at the High Court in Kampala on July 29 during his treason trial.
He reportedly became unresponsive after protesting against the continuation of proceedings without his preferred defence lawyers. The incident led to his emergency evacuation from court to Mulago, where he received treatment.
Besigye and his aide, Hajj Obeid Lutale, have been in custody since November 2024 after their detention in Kenya and subsequent return to Uganda.
They face treason charges, which carry a maximum penalty of death upon conviction.
Prosecutors allege that between 2023 and 2024, the accused held meetings in Geneva, Athens, Nairobi and Kampala to solicit funding, acquire weapons and organise efforts to overthrow the Government by force.
Besigye and his co-accused deny the allegations, while their lawyers and supporters have described the charges as politically motivated.
