Arua City engineering department has launched a road project to construct and rehabilitate a 2.7 km road connecting the two busy city suburbs of Onduparaka and Ediofe.
This project aims to improve access and foster development in the area, with improvements on the road including opening, shaping, grading, and compacting the road using quality materials, scheduled to take two months.
The total cost of the project is UGX 260 million, funded by the road rehabilitation grant and the Uganda Road Fund.
During the project launch officiated by Polly Ongom, the Assistant Resident City Commissioner for Arua in charge of Ayivu division, emphasized the importance of quality workmanship and cautioned the engineering department against shoddy work throughout implementation period.
“Let us make sure that the quality and standard of work we do here matches the national standards, if there is a need, please use the local people here so that they benefit from the project,” he advised.
The Community members, local leaders, including the Mayor of Ayivu division, the Member of Parliament for Ayivu West, Arua city officials, and local councilors, attended the event to witness the start of the works and to meet the contractors.

Hon Geoffrey Feta, Member of Parliament for Ayivu East and chairperson of the Arua City roads committee, confirmed that the funds for the project are available and expressed confidence that it would be completed within the set time frame.
“The current financial year 2025/2026 is ending about two months’ time, the money for this project is available and we have already approved the work plans and every necessary step needed for the project, today we have launched the work to commence with immediate effect, part of the component includes putting gravels on the road, widening the road and now the road will be improved the value of land will rise, please my people do not sale land recklessly” he said.
Additionally, His Worship Malon Avutia, the mayor of Ayivu division, appreciated the local community for donating part of their land to facilitate the road upgrade.
He also warned parents against allowing children to loiter around the construction site to ensure safety.
“This road has been a community access road now we have upgraded it to a feeder road, I want to thank the community for accepting the project willingly without complaints meaning we understand development, now I want to advise parents to start restraining their children from playing on the road since children are for holiday machines will constantly be on this road and we do not want the project to become a death trap for the community around it,” he said.
The existing road has been in poor condition for a long time, characterized by deep gullies and narrowed lanes, some of which have limited passage to a single lane.
Once completed, the road will serve as an alternative route for the Kirab-Onduparaka-Lia road, which is planned for tarmacking in the 2026/2027 financial year under the UCMID Project, thus easing traffic congestion and supporting regional development.
