The Councilor for Moyo Sub-county in Moyo District has raised concern over delays in the implementation of the government policy to upgrade Health Centre II facilities to Health Centre III level across parishes.
Bada Emmanuel Nunu says although the upgrades are being implemented in phases, delays in the process continue to affect access to better health services in some communities.
He has also questioned why health workers who leave their stations to pursue further studies are not promptly replaced, despite a significant improvement in staffing levels at Logoba Health Centre III.
However, Dr. Adrawa Michael, the Assistant District Health Officer in charge of Maternal Health, says the government has made significant progress in upgrading health facilities across the district.
Dr. Adrawa explains that in 2020, the Ministry of Health initiated a phased programme to upgrade all Health Centre IIs to Health Centre IIIs, beginning with sub-counties that did not have a Health Centre III.
He says Moyo District has benefited significantly from the programme. “As Moyo, we are really blessed. Before the creation of the old parishes, nearly all our Health Centre IIs had been upgraded to Health Centre IIIs under the UGIFT project.”
Despite the progress, concerns remain over the pace of the remaining upgrades and the timely replacement of health workers who leave their stations for further training.
Residents will now be looking to the district and the Ministry of Health to address these gaps and ensure that health facilities are adequately staffed and upgraded to meet the growing needs of communities.
