The Government has directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), local governments and the general public to participate in mandatory monthly National Cleaning Days aimed at improving sanitation, preventing disease outbreaks and promoting environmental conservation across the country.
According to a Cabinet Circular signed by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja on July 10, 2026, the exercise is intended to foster collective responsibility for cleanliness while complementing existing public health and environmental protection efforts.
The initiative comes amid growing concerns over poor waste management, environmental degradation, and the increasing risk of disease outbreaks linked to unhygienic surroundings.
Under the directive, National Cleaning Days will be observed on the last Saturday of every month from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The inaugural exercise is scheduled for Saturday, July 25, 2026.
During the exercise, all non-essential businesses and public services will be suspended to enable citizens to take part in cleaning activities.
The circular tasks MDAs with mobilizing staff, providing technical guidance, and integrating cleaning activities into their institutional work plans.
Local governments have been instructed to coordinate the exercises within their jurisdictions, identify priority areas requiring attention, and work with community leaders, civil society organizations and the private sector to ensure effective implementation.
The monthly activities will include sweeping streets and public spaces, desilting drainage channels, collecting and properly disposing of solid waste, clearing overgrown vegetation, planting trees, and removing illegal dumpsites.
Communities are also encouraged to clean homes, schools, markets, places of worship, and other public facilities while promoting proper waste segregation and disposal.
To ensure effective implementation, the Ministry of Local Government has been designated to coordinate local government participation, while the Ministry of Health will provide technical guidance on public health measures.
The Ministry of Water and Environment will oversee environmental conservation activities, and the Ministry of Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs will coordinate implementation within the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
The Office of the Prime Minister will monitor implementation and submit periodic progress reports to Cabinet. Ministries and local governments have also been directed to sensitize the public through community meetings, media campaigns and stakeholder engagement to encourage widespread participation.
The government says the monthly cleaning exercise is expected to improve sanitation and hygiene, reduce pollution, enhance public health, promote civic responsibility and create cleaner, healthier and more resilient communities across the country.
