Teachers in Arua city are still undecided on whether to participate in the forthcoming celebrations of Uganda’s Independence Day.
This openly came out after most teachers revealed that there’s no need to celebrate as long as their salaries have not being enhanced and that their industrial actions still continue.
Schools are the most immediate population ever seen during the Independence Day celebrations as they participate in the marching, performance of educative songs to make the celebrations colorful.
Justus Oloto the head teacher OF Pokea primary school in Ayivu division affirmed that with the ongoing industrial action by teachers all learners are home and they can’t do any miracle to call them before government fulfills the salary increment pledge.
Oloto said they are not ready to celebrate the Independence Day when their pockets are empty and those who are interested in the celebrations will go as other stakeholders not as teachers or school pupils.
“It’s likely that schools are not going to may be present the pupils but the celebration will be there for other people may be if pupils come they will may come like pupils but as an ordinary citizens unless may be this industrial actions end before the day is celebrated otherwise,” oloto explained.
According to Alioni Victor the Head Teacher of Ediofe boys primary school it’s difficult to congregate this learners to go for celebration of this independence day amidst this industrial actions and are still waiting from the secretariat of UNATU for them to participate in the public event that relate to schools.
“In fact we are crying, when we say we are not going to celebrate we are crying, how can I go and celebrate when my children are dying academically. When I cannot send my children to better secondary schools,” Alioni revealed.
However, Geoffrey Etoma The head teacher of springs nursery and primary school a private school in Arua city explained that they are ready to send their pupils to celebrate this Independence Day even if they don’t receive invitation from central division.
“We do this by preparing learners for marching exercise where when they go there they will able to march and then also other activities that the organizers will feel its befitting,” Etoma said.
Uganda is celebrating the 63rd Independence Day this year.
