The Gulu Archdiocese is set to mark a significant moment in its pastoral mission with the ordination of seven clergy members scheduled for May 9 at Gulu Cathedral Parish.
At the ceremony, six deacons will be elevated to the priesthood, signifying the culmination of years of rigorous spiritual formation, theological education, and pastoral preparation.
Those to be ordained priests are Rev. Deacon Erick Acelam (Lacor Parish), Rev. Deacon Augustine Oloya (Namukora Parish), Rev. Deacon Felix Allan Torach (Holy Rosary Parish), Rev. Deacon Polycarp Okema (Pajule Parish), Rev. Deacon Robert Odong (Paicho Parish), and Rev. Deacon Geoffrey Rackara (Gulu Cathedral Parish).
Similarly, Seminarian Daniel Comboni Torach of Lacor Parish will be ordained to the diaconate, marking a crucial step in his journey toward priesthood.
Monsignor Cyprian Ocen P’akec, Parish Priest of Gulu Cathedral Parish and Episcopal Vicar for the Gulu Vicariate, described the forthcoming ordination as a moment of deep ecclesial and spiritual importance.
“The celebration reflects the fulfillment of Christ’s exhortation to His disciples to pray for laborers in the vineyard, noting that the Church continues to witness God’s response through new vocations,” he said.
He further emphasized the indispensable role of the priesthood in sustaining the sacramental life of the Church, particularly the Eucharist, stressing that the Eucharist remains the source and summit of Christian life, he noted that the presence of ordained ministers is essential to meet the growing pastoral and spiritual needs of the faithful.
Meanwhile, the Central Organizing Committee has issued an appeal for financial support to facilitate the successful hosting of the event, indicating a projected budget of 19 million Ugandan shillings. Fundraising efforts are already underway, according to Jackline Alimo, a member of the finance committee, who called for continued generosity from well-wishers and the wider community.
Piero Paul Ocaya, chairperson of the Central Organizing Committee, has encouraged active participation in preparatory meetings, emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility in organizing a meaningful celebration. He also urged the faithful to remain engaged and supportive throughout the preparation process.
The Archbishop of Gulu is expected to preside over the ordination ceremony, during which he will call upon the ordinands to embrace their vocation with fidelity, humility, and a deep commitment to service.
