The district returning officer of Moyo District has officially nominated six candidates for both the District Woman Member of Parliament and the general constituency seats to contest in Moyo’s 2026 parliamentary elections.
By the closure of the nomination exercise today, four candidates had been nominated, joining two others who were nominated yesterday — Dr. Lagu Charles, an independent candidate, and Awio Lilian Temaya, contesting under the Democratic Front Party ticket.
Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaduchu, the incumbent Woman Member of Parliament for Moyo District contesting as an independent, pledged total dedication to work with the people of Moyo District to address their challenges. “I urge you, people of Moyo District, to rally behind me come the 2026 parliamentary elections so as to finalize the existing developmental projects in my manifesto,” the minister appealed.
Dr. Lagu Charles, contesting as an independent candidate for the West Moyo Constituency, said his team has developed implementation strategies while building strategic partnerships and collaborations to deliver results that can holistically transform Moyo. “We are going to revitalize the district farm institute to become a demonstration farm for farmers,” he stated.
Aleru Tom Aza, the incumbent Member of Parliament for West Moyo Constituency on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket, vowed to lobby for the fulfillment of the presidential pledges to the people of Moyo District by articulating them on the floor of Parliament.
He cited the construction of the Omi–Laropi Bridge and the upgrading of the Laropi–Moyo–Afoji–Jale Road to promote international trade and employment opportunities.
Chandia Benedetti Kodili, the NRM flag bearer for the Woman Member of Parliament seat in Moyo District, equally pledged her total support in protecting and advancing the achievements of the ruling party. “I am really delighted because you people have entrusted me,” she said.
Awio Lilian Temaya, who was directly nominated as a candidate for the area Member of Parliament under the Democratic Front Party ticket, asked the electorate to remain calm, respect one another, and focus on the development agenda. “I am here to challenge the men who are contesting with me to abandon stereotypes against women and help change the face of Moyo District,” she remarked.
Richard Opio Ogen, the District Returning Officer of Moyo District, called upon all aspirants to conduct decent campaigns in their respective areas.
He noted that during official campaign rallies, some electorates and agents of candidates have previously been victims of violence. “Whoever will be found engaging in unlawful acts shall be apprehended by security operatives, because even returning officers are guided by the law,” he warned.
In line with Section 8 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, Cap 177, the Electoral Commission appointed Wednesday, 22nd and Thursday, 23rd October 2025, as the dates for nomination of candidates for election to Parliament representing the various constituencies.
The nominated candidates are expected to commence their campaign rallies on 10th November 2025.
