Farmers in Moyo district have encountered challenges brought about by the new pests diseases known as the vacilliam wilt affecting vegetables such tomatoes, cabbages and others as a result of the too much rains received in the second rainy season
Tandrupasi Isaac a farmer in Fodia village noted that the new disease is dangerous if not properly prevented. “The foods we normally grow are affected, there are some diseases that destroy our food crops mostly the vegetables. As a farmer, if you are not serious and careful, you can’t harvest anything from your farm leaving you stressed,” Tandrupasi Expressed.
Iranya Charles Lulu, a farmer who doubles as the parish chief Afoji a specialist in growing vegetables such as cabbages and tomatoes realized another new bacterial infections which is resistant to chemicals. “The most profound challenge I have identified in vegetables especially tomatoes that we are growing is the new pest which is called Tirips, it’s disturbing a lot even if you try to spray it with chemicals, after two to three hours it comes back,” Lulu explained.
However Mugisha Alex the field agronomist Apiviva limited gives an over view of the new disease pest discovered. “There are several pests and diseases attacking our crops, we have what is called tuetap soluti which is currently giving farmer’s serious headache. But among all these diseases, there is a new one which is upcoming more especially in tomato production which we call the vacilliam wilt which most of the farmers are not well vast about or still lack knowledge about, causing great challenges in tomato production. This has equally become a threat to farmers and trying to demoralize our farmers in Madi sub-region and West Nile at large” Mugisha said.
Despite the call for farmers to grow fast maturing crops during the second rainy season since it is shorter, these challenges push them back.
