Residents and local leaders in Moyo district have called upon President Yoweri Katugta Museveni, to prioritize infrastructural development in the area especially the road from Laropi-Moyo- Afoji –Jale upgrade since it’s a Trans African highway which links Uganda and East Africa for regional trade.
They also demanded that Moyo District be given a municipality status. This appeal was made during the president’s campaign rally at Celecelea stadium in Moyo district where the district local council five (LC5) Mr. Williams Anyama emphasized that such developments are vital for accelerating economic growth and improving service delivery in the district.
The LC5 who serves as the NRM chairperson for Moyo district highlighted the challenges of low development in Moyo district.
He stressed the need for infrastructural projects such as the construction of Laropi Bridge, upgrading of Laropi-Moyo- Afoji –Jale road and establishment of industrial park in Moyo to create employment opportunities and drive socio economic growth and transformation.
Additionally, in his presentation he requested that Moyo district should be granted municipality status to support further development. “Moyo district is facing challenges of low development. It is crucial that Laropi Bridge be constructed and Laropi-Moyo- Afoji –Jale road upgraded since it’s a Trans African highway which will link Uganda and East Africa to the regional trade and industrial areas established to provide employment opportunities and promote socio economic growth and transformation,” he noted.
“Furthermore we request that Moyo district be granted municipality to enhance development efforts.” he added.
The state minister for primary education who doubles as the Woman Member of Parliament Moyo District, Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaducu highlighted the government’s efforts in improving education infrastructure and commends the president for establishing schools in every parish. She further urged the president to consider elevating Moyo to a municipality status noting that Moyo is among the original 18 districts of Uganda emphasizing that while many of those have attained city or municipality statuses, Moyo remains at a town council level.
The minister expressed optimism that Moyo’s elevation would soon be realized to match the pace of national development.
“We appreciate the development of school facilities in Moyo and thank president Museveni for ensuring that every parish has a school. However we also appeal to you Mr. president to consider granting Moyo a municipality status, Moyo is one of the original eighteen districts in Uganda, and while many of those have become cities, we are still at the town council level. Our hope is that Moyo will be elevated to municipality status soon,” said Dr. Moriku.
The state minister for trade and privatization, Hon. Evelyn Anite, responded to Moyo districts appeal for industrial development by advising the local council five chairperson to formally write to the ministry.
She said the ministry would then take the steps to reserve the 200 acres of land already provided in Afoji for the establishment of an industrial zone in Moyo.
Hon. Anite added that government is committed to promoting regional industrialization, citing the example of the presidential industrial Hub already established in Adjumani district.
She noted that proposed industrial park in Moyo would help absorb graduates from the hub and create more employment opportunities for the youths.
She reaffirmed that, under the leadership of president Museveni, the Ministry of trade and privatization is ready to support the initiative.
“I want to thank the leaders of Moyo district for raising the need for industrial development. I advise the local council five chairperson to write officially to the ministry of trade and privatization so that we reserve the 200 acres of land you have provided in Afoji for the industrial zone,” Anite noted.
“We have already seen the impact of the industrial hub established by the president in Adjumani, and we want to build on that by attracting investors to madi sub region. This will provide employment opportunities for the graduate’s from the industrial hub. I want to assure you that under the leadership of president Museveni, we are committed to making this a reality.
The campaign rally at celecelea stadium in Moyo district not only provided a platform to engage with the president but also allowed local leaders to voice key developmental concerns and proposals.
From appeals for improved infrastructure and elevation to municipality status, to commitment towards the industrialization and job creation, the discussions reflected the district’s aspirations for growth and transformation.
Moyo remains hopeful that their concerns will translate into tangible action, bringing lasting socio economic benefits to the district and the wider madi sub region.
