The District Police Commander (DPC) for Moyo District, SP Abel Muwonge, has assured residents that ongoing concerns over increasing cases of night attacks, theft, and street criminality will soon be addressed through intensified security operations.
His remarks come after several shops in Moyo Town Council were broken into on Sunday June 14, 2026 night, sparking widespread concern among business owners and community members.
Speaking to the media, SP Muwonge said police have already arrested several suspects linked to theft and housebreaking and are currently holding them in custody as investigations continue “We are going to intensify night patrols, especially after midnight, because we have studied the pattern of these crimes. Most of the suspects begin their operations after midnight,” Muwonge said.
He expressed confidence that the enhanced security measures would significantly reduce criminal activities in the district. “By the end of this week, the public will begin to see positive results from our operations,” he added.
The Chairperson of Moyo Town Council, Chandiga Ceaser, acknowledged the growing number of theft-related cases reported in the municipality and called for collective efforts to combat crime. “The number of theft cases is increasing in Moyo Town Council. Some youths gather in isolated areas where they engage in drug abuse and later attack residents during the evening hours. This requires a joint effort from all stakeholders,” Chandiga said.
He further noted that criminals often target residents in poorly lit areas, stealing money, mobile phones, and other valuables. “These are serious crimes that require every stakeholder and member of the community to remain vigilant and support security efforts,” he added.
Meanwhile, Maiku Apia Frank, the LC I Chairperson of Central One Cell, called for coordinated security operations to address the growing insecurity in the town. “There are several dark spots within the town where these gangs meet, plan their activities, and execute their missions. This requires urgent intervention from the security agencies,” Frank said.
The Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Moyo District, Julius Nyerere, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring security and protecting residents. “We have taken charge of the security situation and are ready to strengthen surveillance and patrols. The operations will be integrated, involving the Police, UPDF, and other security agencies,” Nyerere said.
Local leaders and security officials have urged residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and cooperate with security personnel as efforts to curb crime in Moyo District continue.
