Poultry feed prices vary with the different feed companies in Arua city, as the prices get relatively lower with the current relative increase in the supply of maize and other materials for feed making.
At Omia agri-business, a kilogram of starter chicken feeds goes for 3000 shillings, and in bulk, it goes at 2900 per kilogram, making it 145,000 shillings par sack of 50 kilograms, from the 150,000 shillings initial prize.
Sabir Ismail, an animal health nutritionist with Omia agri-business attributes the current drop to the increase in supply of maize and other raw materials for feed processing, “Their demand depends on how much supply of chicken at a moment, this week it can be high, and then the other week it reduces, currently, poultry feed is coming down a little, the last few months it had gone up because supply for maize was low, its three thousand in Kilograms for starter, grower, finisher except concentrate which is five thousand shilling, but when you buy these things in bulk especially starter of 2900 shillings per kilograms takes it to 145,000 shillings per sack of 50 kilograms,” Sabir said.
However, at Kuku chick, there is a little increase though their prizes still correspond with the prizes elsewhere in the city,
Kizito Onzima, who works with Kuku chick, says, despite of the variations in pricing, business is proceeding well, “We normally sale broiler starter feed at 150,000 shillings, also we have concentrate, what we normally do is, every last Friday of the month, we bring black Friday for a discount of 5000 shillings on every bag of feeds, as of now, they went up bit, but they always switch depending on production of maize majorly, business is not bad because we are able to at least go beyond our target of supply per every two weeks,” said Kizito.
According to these feed experts, manufactured chicken feeds offer several distinct advantages over local or home-mixed feeds, and while local feeds may be cheaper, commercial options provide a reliable foundation for modern poultry farming.
