Residents of Dubai Zone in Makindye Division have told investigators that the assailants who fatally attacked SC Villa captain David Owori fled the scene on a motorcycle after robbing him on Tuesday night.Owori, 27, was attacked along Nalinya–Mpologoma Road while walking home from training.
He sustained serious head injuries and later died in the Intensive Care Unit at Case Hospital on Wednesday. Witnesses told Uganda Radio Network (URN) that the attackers allegedly struck the footballer with paving stones before stealing two mobile phones and an unspecified amount of money.
They then fled, leaving him unconscious in a drainage channel. Nicholas Kabonge, one of Owori’s close friends who was among the first people to reach the scene, said the footballer routinely walked home after buying food from a nearby supermarket.
Kabonge believes the attackers either trailed Owori from the shopping area or lay in wait along the poorly lit footpath leading to his residence.”
He never used a boda boda after shopping. He always walked home. We believe they attacked him from behind because of the way we found him lying in the drainage channel. He was still alive when we arrived, but we later realised he had suffered serious injuries,” Kabonge said.
According to Kabonge, the attackers fled when approaching vehicle headlights illuminated the area. He said residents saw them ride away on a motorcycle towards Salama Road, adding that investigators may have to rely on CCTV footage from nearby roads because there are no surveillance cameras along the footpath where the attack occurred.
Owori’s brother, Joel Ochenge, said investigators from several security agencies have since visited the family and recorded statements as investigations continue.
He said several residents who responded after hearing a commotion reported seeing a motorcycle speeding away from the scene shortly after the attack.
“We are hopeful the security agencies will arrest those responsible. They have taken away someone who meant everything to our family,” Ochenge said.He appealed to security agencies to intensify investigations, noting that residents have previously complained about robberies committed by criminals using motorcycles along the same road.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachel Kawala confirmed that detectives processed the crime scene and are continuing investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible.
Police are expected to review CCTV footage from nearby locations while forensic investigators analyse evidence recovered from the scene and the victim’s clothing for possible leads.
Owori was initially taken to Sir Albert Cook Hospital for emergency treatment before being referred to Case Hospital, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. He succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning.
The killing has renewed concerns about violent street robberies in Kampala and its suburbs, particularly attacks involving assailants riding motorcycles.
Residents of Dubai Zone say similar incidents have previously been reported in the area and are calling for increased police patrols and improved street lighting.
Born on September 23, 1998, Owori captained SC Villa during the 2025/26 Uganda Premier League season and was widely regarded as one of the club’s most influential players. He is scheduled to be buried on Saturday in Tororo District.
