Police have arrested the taxi driver who allegedly knocked dead Kikuube District Chairperson, Peter Banura, and had been on the run since the April 4 incident.
The suspect, identified as Tom Mugabirwe, driver of taxi registration number UBQ 853E, was arrested on Monday evening in Moyo District, West Nile, where he had been hiding since the incident occurred at Butyamba Cell in Kikuube Town Council.
According to the Albertine Region Police Public Relations Officer, SP Julius Hakiza, the suspect is currently being transported back to Kikuube District to record a statement.
The case file will later be submitted to the Resident State Attorney for guidance on the charges to be preferred.
“We arrested the suspect in Moyo District, where he has been hiding since the incident happened. He has been on the run, but our Flying Squad team has been tracking him, and we successfully apprehended him,” Hakiza said.
Police revealed that the suspect’s actions also led to the arrest of the vehicle owner, Mr Solomon Sabiti. Sabiti was arrested last Thursday and arraigned before the Hoima Chief Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges of failure to keep proper employee records.
He was remanded to Kiryatete Government Prison but was granted a cash bail of Shs1 million by Chief Magistrate George Kunihira on Tuesday when he again appeared before court.
Hakiza urged members of the public to cooperate with police by reporting suspected criminals, noting that failure by suspects to surrender can lead to unnecessary costs and complications.
“The suspect’s actions led to his employer’s arrest. If he had reported himself immediately after the accident, a lot of resources used in tracking him down would have been saved,” he said.
He also cautioned drivers and cyclists against reckless behavior on the roads, particularly speeding and ignoring traffic rules.
“Some boda boda riders and cyclists do not follow road signs and often cross roads carelessly. All road users must observe traffic regulations to prevent such tragedies,” Hakiza added.
Banura, the former Kikuube District Chairperson, died after being knocked down by a taxi and was buried on last Thursday.
