In a brutal act of mob action, a 22-year-old theft suspect identified as Chagua Badru was lynched by an irate Mob at his residence in Atipili West, Maganga Ward, Kuru Town Council, Yumbe District, police confirmed Saturday.
The homicide, classified under CRB Reference YBE CRB 528/2025, unfolded late Thursday night around 11:00 PM, with the incident reported to authorities at 10:30 am on October 5.
Badru, an Aringa peasant farmer from Atipili Village in Alinga Parish, succumbed to his injuries at Yumbe Regional Referral Hospital at 07: 00 Am on Friday after being rushed there in critical condition, police said.
According to North West Nile regional police spokesperson SP Collins Asea, Badru was initially apprehended on September 2 and remanded at Kuru Police Station on theft charges under SD Ref 08/30/09/2025.
The suspect, described by investigators as a “habitual offender,” allegedly broke out of custody alongside accomplices before resurfacing at his home. “Community members, acting as vigilantes, ambushed and assaulted him at his residence,” Asea stated in an official release.
Asea disclosed that Responding patrol units from Kuru Police Station arrived at approximately on October 5, discovering Badru in a pool of blood from repeated blunt-force trauma.
Despite immediate evacuation to the hospital, the victim was pronounced dead on arrival.
Crime scene forensics uncovered a cache of incriminating evidence at Badru’s dwelling, including a charred Bajaj Boxer motorcycle suspected in multiple livestock heists turkeys and goats among the pilfered goods.
Additional contraband seized comprised forged local council stamps from Kemeru, Ngakua, Locara, and Kataro; counterfeit assistant veterinary officer stamps for Kochi and Ariwa sub-counties; an original movement permit (S/N 05566148); burglary tools such as breaking implements and padlocks; and pilfered uniforms from Yumbe Regional Referral Hospital staff.
Local council chairpersons have mobilized with Kuru Town Council Police in a joint task force to hunt down the escaped co-conspirators and any vigilante ringleaders involved in the extrajudicial killing. “We urge calm and condemn this lawless retribution,” Asea added, warning that mob violence undermines due process.
According to the 2024 Uganda Police Annual Crime Report, authorities logged 1,016 incidents of mob justice nationwide, claiming 1,098 lives predominantly tied to petty theft disputes in rural communities.
