Residents of Yumbe District have called for the establishment of a Skilling Hub, Industrial Park, and Demonstration Farm to promote youth employment and improve livelihoods. According to the latest UBOS census, Yumbe District has a population of over one million people, most of whom are South Sudanese refugees living in the Bidi Bidi base camp and predominantly peasant farmers.
Youth unemployment in the district stands at over 40 percent, the highest in the West Nile region. To address these challenges, local leaders have appealed to the government to make a deliberate effort to set up a skilling center, demonstration farm, and industrial park.
They believe these initiatives would help tackle persistent livelihood issues such as poverty, hunger, and unemployment. In a show of commitment, residents have freely donated over 240 acres of land to the government for development projects that locals can learn from and benefit directly.
Majid Aniku Harunah, a resident and NRM Chairman for Yumbe District, emphasized the urgent need for a new skilling and demonstration hub in the area.
Meanwhile, Zaitun Driwaru, a Commissioner at the NRM Secretariat and a daughter of Yumbe, said she has offered an additional 10 acres of land to support the initiative.
Driwaru noted that the people of Yumbe face difficulties due to the long distance to the Zombo Presidential Hub and the absence of a local industrial park and demonstration farm.
Evelyn Anite, the Minister of State for Investment and Privatization, welcomed the residents’ call, noting that Yumbe now has adequate and reliable electricity to support industrial development. She revealed that more government interventions are already planned for implementation in the district.
According to proponents, addressing youth unemployment, poverty, and hunger in northern Uganda will require equipping communities with practical and innovative skills to enable self-reliance and sustainable income generation.
